This year the Big Rapids High School Alumni Association selected Larry Horgan (BRHS Class of 1958) for a BRHS Alumni Special Achievement Award – Athletics. Larry was an outstanding Track/field star for BRHS and held the State of Michigan High School Pole Vault record of 12 feet 5 ¼ inches for many years. Larry got his start in pole vaulting by strapping together bamboo fishing poles and using the “pole” to jump over a homemade back yard vault stand. In those days, Larry noted, a pole was rigid and had no bend to it to assist in making the vault. His record stood until the newer more flexible poles began to be used by athletes. Congratulations extended to Larry and his accomplishment while a student at Big Rapids High School.
